Tomato 'Tomaccio'

Written by Heleigh Bostwick

Tomatoes, and especially cherry and grape tomatoes are easy to grow in containers on the patio as well as in smaller gardens for those with limited time and space. And now, there’s a new cherry tomato coming to town—and a gourmet one at that. It’s called Tomato 'Tomaccio' and is the fruit (pun intended) of 12 years of breeding work to create a sweet tomato that is easily dried much like a raisin in the sun.

The fruit, both fresh and dried, is said to be superb by Germans and French who have been growing Tomato 'Tomaccio' for several years now; however, it's not scheduled to make its debut to the US public until 2010. That said, as a garden writer I actually have 6 of these plants to test out. They arrived last week and, if it ever stops raining, will be in the ground soon.

As mentioned, Tomato 'Tomaccio' is a sweet cherry tomato that is easily dried (3 hours in the oven at a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and is supposed to be even sweeter when dried. It can be grown in containers or in the ground, but grows to a height of 9 feet or so and needs support either stakes or tomato collars or trellises.
